Pearl Care Guide

1. Keep Pearls Away from Chemicals

  • Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals like perfume, cosmetics, hair sprays, and cleaning products. These can damage the surface of the pearls, dulling their luster or causing them to discolor.
  • Always apply perfumes, lotions, and other beauty products before putting on your pearl jewellery to prevent direct contact.

2. Clean Pearls Gently

  • Wipe pearls after wearing with a soft, damp cloth to remove any oils, dust, or residue from your skin. This will help maintain their shine and keep them clean.
  • Do not use abrasive cloths or chemical cleaners. Stick to a soft microfiber or cotton cloth.
  • If needed, clean your pearls gently with lukewarm water and mild soap. Use a soft brush (like a toothbrush with soft bristles) to gently remove any dirt from crevices. Be sure to dry them thoroughly with a soft cloth afterward.

3. Store Pearls Properly

  • **Store your pearls in a soft cloth pouch or a velvet-lined jewellery box. This helps protect them from scratches and damage.
  • Avoid storing pearls in plastic bags or airtight containers, as moisture can get trapped and affect the pearls’ quality over time. Pearls need a little bit of air to stay healthy.
  • Keep your pearl jewellery separate from other jewellery, especially harder stones (like diamonds, sapphires, etc.), to avoid scratches.

4. Wear Your Pearls Regularly

  • Wear your pearls often! Pearls are organic and actually benefit from being worn regularly. The natural oils from your skin will help maintain their luster.
  • However, take care not to wear your pearls when doing physical activities, as this could expose them to unnecessary damage or wear.

5. Avoid Excessive Heat or Humidity

  • Keep pearls away from extreme heat (such as leaving them in direct sunlight or in a hot car) or high humidity, which can dry out or dehydrate the nacre (the outer layer of the pearl). Excessive dryness can lead to the pearls becoming brittle over time.
  • Store your pearls in a cool, dry place, ideally around room temperature (about 20°C or 68°F).

6. Take Care When Putting on or Taking Off Jewellery

  • When putting on or removing your pearl jewellery, be careful not to pull on the threads (in necklaces or bracelets) or chains.
  • Always undo clasps gently and avoid forcing them, as this could damage both the clasp and the pearls.

7. Restring Pearl Necklaces Regularly

  • Over time, the string of a pearl necklace can wear out. To avoid breakage, it’s recommended to restring your pearl necklaces every 1-2 years, depending on how often you wear them. Restringing ensures that the pearls are secure and not at risk of falling off.

8. Avoid Wearing Pearls During Swimming or Bathing

  • Remove your pearl jewellery before swimming in the pool or the sea, as the saltwater or chlorine can damage the pearls’ surface, and soaps can cause build-up.
  • Also, avoid wearing pearls while showering, as soap can accumulate on the surface, dulling their luster.

9. Pearls and Moisture

  • Pearls are naturally porous and absorb moisture from the environment. They can benefit from being worn as they absorb natural oils from your skin. However, after wearing, it’s important to clean them gently and dry them properly to remove any excess moisture.
